CAP String Orchestra Members Perform at Harvard, CIC, Portugal and Sewanee, Tennessee

CAP is pleased to announce the CAP String Orchestra Quartet was awarded second prize in the ensemble category at the Crescendo International Music Competition (CIC), a youth music nonprofit that aims to inspire individuals to pursue their passion for music. As prize winners, the students were invited to perform at Harvard University’s John Knowles Paine Concert Hall.

Students Jovan (11th grade, Douglas Anderson School of the Arts), Deiloy (11th grade, DASOTA), N’Diyah (9th grade, DASOTA), and Leo (11th grade, DASOTA) are members of the CAP String Orchestra. This is an ensemble of current and former CAP string students who collaborate, perform and further their understanding of classical and contemporary music. The quartet performed “Eight Organ Preludes and Fugues arranged for String Quartet by J.S. Bach” on May 18, 2024. This is the third consecutive year CAP students have performed at the internationally renowned competition.

“Performing at Harvard was a dream come true,” said N’Diyah. “To be able to visit and play at such a prestigious institution has been a highlight of my musical journey. I’m so humbled by the opportunity and look forward to future endeavors.”

The CIC is a youth music competition held annually since 2007. There are two rounds of competitions – auditions and winners’ recitals. Auditions were held both by video submission and in person throughout the USA, Canada, Europe and Asia in November and December of 2023. CIC competitions allow performers to maximize their potential and serve as a professional setting for aspiring musicians to showcase their talents at prestigious concert halls worldwide. Performers are also presented with an invaluable opportunity to interact with other musicians and learn essential life lessons such as having the confidence to get back up after stumbling.

“Providing young artists with experiences like these allows for them to envision a career path forward in the arts,” said CAP President & CEO Rev. Kimberly L. Hyatt. “We are grateful to be able to support students in pursuing their dreams as artists through experiences that spark inspiration and foster dedication to their chosen art form.”

Two students from the quartet performed at festivals this summer. Deiloy attended the Bendada Artist Academy (BMF) and music festival in Bendada, Portugal. Students who attend the BMF Artist Academy have the opportunity to study with acclaimed faculty, engage in lectures and masterclasses with professional artists and perform in collaboration with chamber music ensembles.

Jovan, a CAP String Orchestra member, attended the Sewanee Summer Music Festival, a four-week intensive program in Tennessee.

Jovan attended the Sewanee Summer Music Festival in Tennessee, a four-week intensive program that offers two high-level orchestral experiences—the Cumberland Orchestra and the Sewanee Symphony. Jovan participated in the Cumberland Orchestra, a pre-professional symphony orchestra for advanced pre-college and college students. In addition to chamber music groups, Jovan performed high-level repertoire and worked with numerous teaching artists throughout his time at Sewanee.

Deiloy, a CAP String Orchestra member, attended the BMF Artist Academy in Bendada, Portugal.

“Going to Bendada meant taking another step forward on my life’s journey,” said Deiloy. “Portugal was an unforgettable experience. While I enjoyed taking in the sights and experiencing a different culture, I was most excited to hone my craft and take my violin playing to the next level. Participating in CAP string programs since elementary school has provided significant opportunities such as this one, allowing me to collaborate with others and develop my craft.”

Two other students from the quartet participated in music camps throughout the region this summer. Leo attended the Cannon Music Camp – a three-week retreat offering intensive college preparatory work – at Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina. N’Diyah volunteered with the CAP String Orchestra Summer Intensive program, assisting the group with lessons and activities, and the LaVilla School of the Arts Orchestra Camp.
