At CAP, we love to hear from our alumni. Every so often, a truly special story hits our inbox and we have to share. This is one of those stories.
Recently, a former student (who first attended CAP dance classes nearly 20 years ago!) contacted us. He had chanced upon an early CAP YouTube video in which he was “thrilled” to spot his own face. He was inspired to reach out to us in search of more photos to bring back those great memories. He was also kind enough to share an update on his journey and how that formative experience continues to impact his life.
And yes, we did still have those old photos!

My name is Terrence Loper III, and I was a student in the Cathedral Arts Project’s after-school dance program at Hyde Park Elementary between 2006–2010. I recently saw a 2009 CAP Showcase video on YouTube and was thrilled to appear in it—it brought back so many cherished memories.
I’ve always enjoyed dancing, even before starting school—just moving to trending or popular songs at the time was something I naturally gravitated toward.
One day while attending the afterschool program at Hyde Park Elementary, I saw a group practicing dance in the auditorium. I was instantly drawn to it. I believe I went home that same day and told my mom, and somehow she made it possible for me to join. That’s when my journey with the Cathedral Arts Project began.

I participated in CAP’s dance program, taught by Ms. Julia [Gregory], from kindergarten through 3rd grade, when I moved and had to leave Hyde Park. Those early years had a huge impact on me. I often think that if I had stuck with dance continuously from then, I might’ve been a professional dancer today. Even though I didn’t pursue dance professionally, the confidence, joy and creativity it gave me have stuck with me ever since.
Today, I’m serving in the U.S. Army as an Information Technology Specialist, but dance will always be part of who I am. I’m grateful for the foundation CAP gave me.
