Did you know? CAP began 30 years ago at @jaxcathedral with just one dance class for 10 children who lived in a nearby transitional housing facility. Within three years, the organization began to include dance programs at area elementary schools, and in 2000 it received its 501(c)(3) designation. Today, the organization has provided over 31,000 students, primarily living in under-resourced communities in Duval County, with professional arts education in art as therapy, dance, media arts, music, theatre and visual arts. “For 30 years, the Cathedral Arts Project has stayed true to its mission to make quality arts education accessible to all children, and we will continue to expand our programs as we pursue this goal,” said President & CEO Rev. Kimberly L. Hyatt, “At CAP, we know from our data that nourishing a child’s creative spirit and innovative thinking also supports their ability to reach their full potential as a student and garner a better understanding of their own humanity.”

Arts education promotes understanding... Through works of art that reflect the creative thinking of diverse peoples, children come to see their own story from different perspectives. They also learn the stories of others from diverse backgrounds. The arts help children look more closely at both our differences and that which we have in common. This week, CAP is joining the national initiative in raising awareness about the importance of arts education by participating in @americans4arts #ArtsEdWeek. Did you know? On average, children who participate in CAP's visual & performing arts programs for one year score seven points higher on standardized tests and achieve higher grade level proficiency. Over a 10-year period, 97% of CAP students were promoted to the next grade level and 84% strengthened communication skills with peers and adults and increased “grit” indicators such as class participation and task completion. #BecauseofArtsEd #CAPkidsjax #TheArtsAddUp #artsed

Arts programs for children are essential. Studies show that students with access to strong arts programs have higher test scores than those without. They provide an outlet for those who most need it, teach invaluable life skills, and bring communities together. By doing this, the arts become a catalyst for academic and life success. When surveyed, students from last year’s programs had to say these things about being in their CAP program:
-My CAP class helped me feel more confident.
-I performed better in school.
-I learned to work hard and overcome my fears.
-Be kind, not mean, and sing your heart out! Learning any art form allows children and youth to gain essential skills, like creative thinking, perseverance, teamwork and self-discipline, that benefit them in all areas of their life. The arts provide experiences that are personally enriching, building the confidence and character children need to excel. Every child has a creative spirit. For some, it comes alive through the visual arts: turning blank pages and digital canvases into expressions of hope. For others, it breathes through their bodies – transforming notes, choreography, and words into personal statements of joy. Children develop the technical skills to prepare for these moments through instruction in the arts. Along the way, the arts develop their unique strengths – like self-confidence, creative thinking, self-respect, empathy and perseverance. “You Can Keep Your Wallet” - A student story from String Teaching Artist Josh Stone “I got a weird email over the weekend from a 5th grader and all it said was 'you can keep your wallet.' Having no clue what she was talking about, I responded and she reminded me about a bet I made. This student was really nervous about her LaVilla audition which surprised me because she was always super confident in class. She came to an extra rehearsal so I could help her one more time before her audition and she totally freaked out. After watching her break down into tears and being completely surprised and not knowing exactly what to do, I handed her my wallet. I told her that if she doesn’t pass her audition, I will give her everything in my wallet and she could keep the whole thing. Finally, she smiled and started laughing being her normal self. After she sent the first email, she sent me a screenshot of her high audition pass score, and then other students started sending me them as well. This is my favorite time of the year. It’s great to see these students and parents share their excitement when they receive the news. They will still have to wait until the lottery process to find out if they got into the school completely, but I am sure they will all be fine.” Our fellows and teaching artist never cease to go above and beyond for our students. It is everyone’s goal to ensure CAP students feel confident and comfortable walking into a high-stress environment like auditioning and sharing their talents. We are so grateful for an amazing team and even more amazing students! #CAPkidsjax #TheArtsAddUp #artsed #musiceducation

Our students are more confident and outgoing with their student tasks and working collaboratively on any assignment they are given because of the impact of this program.
